Foreign Ministry's promotional activities on Dokdo


Dokdo are a group of small islets in the sea of Japan.
The Dokdo consists of two main islets and 35 smaller rocks. It lie in rich fishing grounds which main contain large deposits of natural gas. 

Sovereignty over the islets is disputed between Japan and South Korea. Sovereignty over the islands has been an ongoing point of contention in Japan-South Korea relations.



From the old days, Dokdo was a part of Usan-guk which was a small country in the Silla period.
Dokdo was also recorded as Choseon's territory in Choseon's government publication.
In spite this historical evidence Japan claims that Dokdo is not the territory of of Korea by the geographical facts and international legal standards.
The Foreign Ministry has published a variety of materials - booklets, smartphone applications and videos- showing the territorial sovereignty of the Republic Korea over Dokdo. 
  • A promotional video about Dokdo is currently in production. It will show Japan's ocupation of Dokdo and historical materials providing sovereignty over Dokdo.
  • The Foreign Ministry Dokdo website serviced only in Korean. It will be serviced in seven foreign languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, Russian, French, Arabic and Spanish).
  • In addition, variety materials, inclooding booklets translated into foreign languages.
  • The Foreign Ministry installed " Dokdo Live's TVs" for korean-language schools , Korean community centers in the US, China and Russia
The Foreign Ministry will continue responding firmly to any injust provocation of Japan over Dokdo. And it will continue promotional activities.
